The house design is not the first picture in the article but it is there and it and the images below were taken by Philip Jensen-Carter. The house project was a major restoration and addition in Greenwich CT built by CT contractor Paul Hirsch of Hirsch Construction Services LLC. (Ironically they didn't select one of our many distinctive Westchester Homes for the article. But then we have houses all around, including Texas!) The addition is featured in the image above on the right in with the colonnade, while left of the same picture is the original Georgian house which inspired the overall design. The schools, Archbishop Stepinac HS in White Plains NY, Villa Maria School in Stamford CT, Pace University in Pleasantville NY and Maria Regina HS in Hartsdale NY needed updated spaces to address ADA compliance, changing education pedagogy, and increasing classroom technology.

Architect For Life
We tell clients when we finish a job, feel free to call whenever and issue comes up, forever. We designed a house for a client over 25 years ago. But the lack of quality of the contractor's work led to problems. Together with the original owner, we are restoring the house, keeping the design, but taking the opportunity to modify the colors. Work is being done by master mason Ed Muller, whose loving craftsmanship is what the house needed the first time around. Here are some progress photos above. More later.

Lavelle School for the Blind in the Bronx have engaged Molinelli Architects for commissions to improve access and safety at each of their campuses, design a custom instructional kitchen classroom and do a master plan for the playground. The design challenge is how to accommodate and foster a learning atmosphere for children who may have other disabilities in addition to limited or no sight.
St. Augustine Parish Hall, Ossining NY
Construction is nearly done on the Molinelli Architects design for changes and upgrades to the Parish Hall for this thriving Parish. The original 19th home was greatly expanded in 1929 for use as a convent/dorm and school and it has been used for both ever since. In addition to code upgrades, our design features a new south entrance.

Siwanoy Outdoor Classroom
Molinelli Architects has designed a Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom for the Siwanoy School in Pelham Manor NY. The classroom is an opportunity for the students to learn in a natural setting about science, math and culture. The classroom will have areas of motor play, digging, performance, an edible garden, a butterfly garden in different naturalist settings. A variety of plants will be scattered around the interactive areas. The care of the gardens will be done by families adopting them for weeks at a time. The goal is to get the children off their devices and see there is a real world beyond the virtual one they see on screens or talk about in their classrooms.

Maria Regina High School INFO CENTER
This year Maria Regina High School updated their library into the information center. Molinelli Architects designed the center to respond to the newer methods students use to access information with wifi, computers and educational interaction media. The entry glass doors were updated to frameless glass. The room is now divided by glass sliding walls allowing mulit-functional spaces for formal and informal research, studying and learning. We even created two team rooms for noisier group study and research. Aesthetically the design exposed the trusses in the main reading room, introduced LED lighting to the school, and picked colors and surfaces to enhance the midcentury modern of the existing building. New Steelcase Furniture augmented the design intent for comfortable flexible spaces.

Solar Tectic Bungalow - AIA Award
Molinelli Architects has won the 2015 American Institute of Architects, Westchester Hudson Valley, Design Award for Research & Development of the Solar Tectic Bungalow. We are grateful to the AIA for this recognition. As heralded here previously, the project involved development of a low cost prototype house for Nepal and manifested in the production of an experimental Compressed Earth Brick building, the first in Westchester County, NY. The findings of this research has be assembled in a book called "Lessons Learned" which Solar Tectic Bungalow and Molinelli Architects will send free as a pdf to anyone who requests it. It is hoped that by sharing the information in the book and the publicity of this award will help further our efforts to find a viable solution to housing shortages in Nepal and elsewhere. We would be happy to team with any interested organization. The ultimate award will be when we see smiles from the people we have helped get a home.

EF's Gaines Hall from Library to Dormitory
This project took the 40,000 sf library that served Marymount College for many years and turned it into a dormitory for 225 students. In a web-based world, a conventional library does not meet the pedagogic style of EF's Language school on the Tarrytown NY Campus. So the building was practically abandoned until the adaptive reuse design by Molinelli Architects gave it new purpose. There was also the design opportunity with the gut-rehab to open up the ceilings to expose the original concrete waffle slab construction. The project also upgraded all the building systems including a new sprinkler system, LED lighting and each bedroom is its own HVAC zone controlled by the building management system. CFS of NYC was did the MPE design and J S Mitchell of NYC was the general contractor.

Molinelli and ST Bungalow get a patent on their housing project.
Ancillary to the bungalow brick project was Michael Molinelli's idea for a fiberglass form that becomes part of the reinforcement for a low cost roof spanning system. With ST Bungalow LC, (also partners in the compress earth brick shed) they have obtained a patent for the idea. Composite World News about the Patent Practical testing and implementing need to take place, but a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
